Nob Hill Jane | Vendor Love
If you’ve known me for a while, you know that I really enjoy the art of calligraphy. It’s such a beautiful form of art, and we adore when our couples add it to their wedding invitation suites or decor! In today’s Vendor Love feature, I’m so excited to have a Connecticut-based calligrapher whose work I absolutely LOVE!
I had followed Erin Mutty of Nob Hill Jane on Instagram long before I ever met her. Last April, Arturo and I finally had the chance to work with Erin on a small event where she created some beautiful wedding day signage for our couple. Read on to learn more about Erin’s process and see some of her stunning work!
Tell me a bit about you and your business! How did you get started in the wedding industry?
"I’m Erin, calligrapher and owner of Nob Hill Jane ®, a calligraphy studio offering modern calligraphy and hand lettered custom signage. Our services include envelope addressing, place cards and favor tags, as well as hand lettered “day of” signage like welcome signs, menu boards and bar signs. Working with all types of media such as acrylic, wood, mirrors and lots more, Nob Hill Jane ® has you covered for the wedding day!
I discovered calligraphy about 2 years ago after taking a beginner dip pen calligraphy lesson from a friend, and became immediately obsessed with all things lettering. What started out as a hobby quickly turned into a business while I split my time between practicing law and raising two young boys with my husband. Last year, I decided to stop practicing law after fifteen years and go all in with Nob Hill Jane ®. I took the proverbial “leap of faith” as they say, and I haven’t looked back. One the best decisions I’ve ever made!”
What do you love most about calligraphy?
"The creativity & versatility! There are so many different ways to letter the same word, and I just love the creative process of finding the perfect style for a particular event. The style of lettering used helps convey the desired mood and enhances the overall feel – when properly done, hand lettered pieces bring a cohesive and custom look to your wedding. Those seemingly small details really do make a big impact.”
What should couples know about your process and about working with you?
"Nob Hill Jane ® works with couples from engagement through their wedding day to ensure that the pieces we create reflect the couple’s story and the vision they have for their big day. When a client contacts me, I like to set up a time to chat and talk all things wedding. As the wedding planning progresses, I like to know as many details as I can - from the layout of the venue, to the type of flowers, to the style of the table settings. All of these details help me determine what will work best for couples and their guests. I also chat with the other vendors involved to ensure that what I’ve come up with complements other aspects of the wedding. It truly is a collaborative effort!”
What is your favorite part about working with couples who are planning their wedding day?
"I enjoy meeting couples and hearing their stories because each one is special and unique. I just love finding ways to incorporate personal touches into the pieces I create, whether its curating a set of vintage stamps for invitation envelopes that relates to where they met, or including a lyric from a favorite song in some of the “day of” signage. It’s all about those personal details!”
What (or who) inspires your creativity?
"I find inspiration in so many places, I never know what’s going to spark an idea until the moment it happens! Each wedding really serves as its own creative starting point. In terms of my business, I’m motivated and inspired by my fellow female bosses out there in the wedding industry and beyond. I’ve been so fortunate to be able to work with some really supportive and incredibly talented women – we really do rise by lifting others.”
How early should couples book you to ensure you'll be available for their wedding day?
"I recommend about four to six months before the wedding date. This allows plenty of time for the creative process to take place. That being said, I always encourage clients to contact me even if the wedding is rapidly approaching – depending on the season, I always try to find a way to make it work!”
What is one tip or piece of advice you'd give a couple for their wedding day?
"Have fun, enjoy it and be in the moment! At the end of the day, it’s about two people and two families coming together to celebrate, and that’s a beautiful thing. So don’t sweat the small stuff - trust the professionals that you’ve hired and that it will all come together in the end.”
