Cake Lore Co. | Vendor Love
Wedding desserts are some of my favorite reception details to photograph on a couple's big day! This past fall, I had the opportunity to photograph a beautiful wedding cake created by the very talented Samantha Miller of Cake Lore Co. during a beautiful Yale University elopement in New Haven, Connecticut! Sam is a Providence, Rhode Island-based pastry chef who is truly dedicated to her craft. Her attention to detail is amazing and her confectionary designs are truly unique! I recently chatted with Sam about her confectionary creations as well as Cake Lore Co. and am so excited for you to get to know her!
Tell me a bit about you and your business! How did you get started in the wedding industry?
"I made my first wedding cake when I was sixteen years old before I attended pastry school or really had any idea of what I was doing. I had become obsessed with baking a few months earlier, and when one of my mom’s friends got engaged, I was thrilled to be asked to make the cake. I was so honored that someone trusted me, at such a young age, with an iconic part of their wedding day. I still remember how specific and unique Christine’s design requests were: she wanted the tiers to be square and jet black, with hot pink and crystal accents. I was so excited that I made the cake for free."
What do you love most about your craft?
"This may sound silly, but I live for the thank you notes. Every couple’s reaction is exciting and special for me, but getting a handwritten thank you in the mail weeks or months after the occasion is beyond touching every single time. Of course, I hold onto all of them and they are an excellent reminder of why I started Cake Lore Co. in the first place."
What should couples know about your process and about working with you?
"My biggest hope for clients coming into the process is that they don't limit themselves. I think the most special elements of the wedding cake are those that highlight the couple’s personalities! The trendiest cake styles of 2018 may be beautiful, but trends come and go, and at the end of the day, I want us to have come up with a design that truly, wholeheartedly, represents the unique individuals being joined together that day. I want couples who would like to work with me to know that whether they want a traditional wedding cake with detailed piping and fresh florals or a literal sculpted dragon, I will bring their unique vision to life."
What is your favorite part of working with couples who are planning their wedding day?
"I love knowing that we are working together to create a special part of one of the biggest days of their lives. The cutting of the cake is such a sweet moment for the couple and I am so lucky to be a part of that thanks to my clients. I also love knowing many of my creations live on in the couples’ freezers for an entire year!"
What (or who) inspires your creativity?
"Nature has been my biggest inspiration so far. If I want to create something and I’m struggling to come up with a design or color palette, I can simply take a walk to get the creativity flowing. There is endless beauty out there just waiting to be represented in cake form!"
How early should couples book you to ensure you'll be available for their wedding day?
"I recommend reaching out at least four months before the big day! However, couples should always reach out regardless because I try my best to accommodate as many clients as I can."
As a pastry chef, what is one tip or piece of advice you'd give a couple for their wedding day?
"My advice is to order the flavor you want, not the flavor you think your guests want. Don’t feel pressured to stick to classic wedding flavors. It’s your day! I can assure you when I get married, my cake will be cotton candy and bubblegum flavored!"
